Midway Stadium Facilities
Midway Stadium was built in 1982 and designed to hold a crowd of 3,000 people. Then-called Municipal Stadium, Midway is a successor in a long line of community ballparks in St. Paul stretching back to the 1800s. Minnesota’s love of community baseball and fun outdoor events often overwhelms Midway Stadium’s capacity, creating long lines to restrooms and concession stands.
Midway Stadium was also built prior to the enactment of the Americans with Disabilities Act. As a result, the ballpark lacks adequate handicapped-accessible seating. A renovation in 1994, funded largely by the Saints, created more seats and improved some of the amenities, but it did not significantly change the stadium’s substandard seating, uneven playing surface, lack of office space, inadequate locker room facilities, and other challenges.
The result is a stadium that no longer meets the needs of players and fans. St. Paul is a desirable location for events including national baseball tournaments − like an American Legion World Series or an NCAA Division II or III World Series − but an outdated Midway Stadium stands in the way of these opportunities.
